Sometimes It's Just Too Easy

goodfellas.jpg

Life in the family isn't for everyone. You work late at night. You risk threats on your person, your reputation, your loved ones. You're always looking over your shoulder. You trust who you can, but you know that, if the situation requires it, you can be hung out to dry.

But if you do what you're told, respect the family, and, above all else, keep your mouth shut, then you'll be all right. Because the family looks out for its own.

Or you say that Bush was doing what's right (even in the minds of some liberals: http://www.slate.com/id/2169718/fr/rss/) notwithstanding the political backlash.

Fair enough; the article is well taken, but my point is less about Bush than it is about the political establishment in general, including the Clinton years. Bush & co. simply make it easy to call attention to the fact that elected officials protect their own.

At the same time, and not to make vapid talking-point arguments here, but let's not forget that this case does have to do with the justification for a poorly planned war initiated on shaky grounds. Sure, Libby doesn't deserve to be a scapegoat for the entire war, but stepping in in this way makes it look like NO ONE will EVER be held accountable. Clinton may not have had sufficient Teflon to escape without a black eye, but this administration simply goes along its merry way.

Ah, well, I guess that's why I'm not in politics.
